Warning

You are about to see a cartoon that was meant to make some serious matter a bit lighter. One of the main reasons given why an article about Nooku (like Babs' primer) could not just be published in the Magazine was, because the company behind the Nooku-software is seen as being in competition with the Joomla!-project. I saw some similarity between my love for the Nooku-framework and Juliet's love for Romeo, who was from a "wrong" family. I really did not imagine it would be offending.

However, this cartoon is felt by some people as:

  • "too inflammatory, offensive to some, and not really helpful in building bridges and encouraging both Nooku and Joomla to work together. (or any other group for that matter)"
  • "quite derogatory and I take some measure of personal offence without knowing "who" it's directed to. I would have been personally quite embarrassed to have seen that published"
  • "way too out there"
  • "unfairly portrays the Joomla project in a negative light"

Please do not critisize the above privately shared personal feelings. They are to be respected.

I was (and still am) very surprised, though. A cartoon may be "tickling" a bit, but it is not our intention to severely hurt anybody; that played a role in our decision to not continue the Jane-cartoon. We tried to play the role of a court jester, who can say the things others are not allowed to say. People were hired for this in the old days by those in power. Queen Elizabeth I is said to have rebuked one of her fools for being insufficiently severe with her.

Paul Orwig, the chief-editor of the JCM wrote to me "I showed the new Jane Beyond cartoon to CLT today, and I am sorry to say it was not approved to be published."

Still want to see it?

Here it is:
